Some key points that arose during the discussion include:
- Criminal backgrounds are a major hindrance for job-seekers in urban communities and more efforts should be made to reduce and remove this as a barrier.
- There is a strong desire for small business ownership and development in urban communities that should be supported by federal initiatives.
- There is continued need for job training and work force development opportunities that link to jobs in high growth sectors such as renewable energy and health care as well as jobs in other industries such as electrical engineering, plumbing and landscaping.
- Funding to support financial literacy and financial education programs for individuals with low to moderate incomes can help members of our community learn to maximize their financial resources.
These key issues along with a number of other points raised during the discussion were submitted to the White House for inclusion in a report being prepared for The President. It is our hope that these issues will be given strong consideration as President Obama and Congress decide the next steps to take toward the creation of jobs in our community.
