Mr. England’s death was 1 in 260 murders that have occurred in Baltimore between 2009 and 2010. With an average of 37 homicides per 100,000 residents, Baltimore ranked number one in 2009 for the number of homicides committed in U.S. cities with a population over 500,000. With the majority of those murdered in Baltimore being African-American men these numbers directly impact the issue of father absence in our city and communities.
CFUF recognizes that preventing homicides is a complex issue and we salute the hard work of law enforcement and city leadership to address it. We believe that a key step in the fight against crime should include sustained investment in workforce development and family strengthening strategies that reduce poverty and provide emotional support for children. Mr. England’s and all other homicides in Baltimore reflect a crisis in our city and communities that continues to create an unhealthy environment for our children and families. We call on all concerned citizens, community groups, and city officials to demand that violence in our neighborhoods is never acceptable and make a commitment to be involved in projects and initiatives that will help to bring this crisis to an end.
