Dr. Lillian Bauder, noted business executive and long-time supporter of higher education, has generously endowed The Bauder Fund for the Center for Urban Families to provide scholarships to CFUF members and their children. Each scholarship recipient will be known as a “Bauder Scholar.” CFUF is grateful to Dr. Bauder for her generosity and her support to help our members and their children achieve success. You can learn more about Dr. Bauder by reading the following biographical sketch.
Dr. Lillian Bauder
After serving on Masco Corporation’s Board of Directors, Dr. Lillian Bauder became Vice President of Masco Corporation in 1996. She retired in 2007 after leading Masco’s global, corporate strategic initiative. Additionally, during her tenure at Masco, Lillian Bauder represented Masco in its civic and charitable activities, was Chairman and President of the Masco Corporation Foundation and was responsible for risk management, travel, health, safety and environmental affairs.
Prior to joining Masco, Dr. Bauder was President and Chief Executive Officer of Cranbrook Educational Community from 1983-1996. Cranbrook comprises an Academy of Art, Art Museum, Institute of Science, Schools and other affiliated groups. Upon her departure, Cranbrook’s Board of Trustees unanimously elected Dr. Bauder President Emeritus. In 2014, she was presented with Cranbrook’s Founders’ Award. Before Cranbrook, Dr. Bauder was at the University of Detroit for fifteen years. She was a professor and served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Bauder graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Douglass College, New Jersey, and was inducted into The Douglass Society in 2001. She used her Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at The University of Michigan where she earned her M.A. and Ph.D. She was chosen by The University of Michigan as one of its Distinguished Rackham Ph.D’s of the last 50 years. Crain’s Detroit Business selected her as one of Detroit’s most influential women.
Dr. Bauder has lectured and consulted locally and nationally on leadership, organizational change, cultural and architectural issues.
After 29 years of service, Dr. Bauder retired from the Board of Directors at DTE Energy Company in May, 2015 where she had been Presiding Director. Dr. Bauder served, also, on the Board of Directors of Comerica, Inc. from which she retired in 2010 after serving for 24 years. She was a trustee, also, on The Skillman Foundation board for 25 years, retiring in 2015. During her tenure, she chaired the board for four years.
While she lived in Michigan, Dr. Bauder was a Trustee of The Henry Ford Health System, having served also as Board Chair of The HFHS’s West Bloomfield Board of Trustees. She was a trustee for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra where she served on the executive committee. She served on the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) and received the Michigan Museum Association’s President’s Award for Lifetime Leadership in 2004. Dr. Bauder is a Director Emeritus of the Detroit Institute of Arts’ Board of Trustees. She was a trustee on Habit for Humanity’s International Board as well as serving as trustee for The Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Foundation. She was The University of Michigan’s alumna-in-residence and chaired the Detroit Festival of the Arts for four years.
Lillian Bauder resides now in Columbia, Maryland. She continues to be asked to serve on boards, teach, consult and give lectures. She is currently a trustee on the Baltimore Community Foundation board and a director on the Community Action Council of Howard County. In 2022, CFHoCo named her “Philanthropist of the Year.”

Bauder Scholarship Application
If you’re interested in learning more about our Bauder Scholarship and application, please reach out to Katrina Ross for more information.
To apply for a scholarship, applicants must:
- Have successfully completed a CFUF gateway program, or be the child of a member who has completed a gateway program;
- be enrolled in or are enrolling in a certification program or post-secondary degree program (2-year, 4-year or graduate degree);
- complete a scholarship application (Download: Member Application | Member’s Child Application);
- provide proof of enrollment or an official transcript, if already enrolled;
- provide a copy of financial aid award letter; and
- participate in a 15-minute Zoom interview (which does not guarantee an award).
To submit the application:
In-person – Applications can be submitted at the Front Desk of CFUF in an envelope labeled “Bauder Scholarship Application”.
Via email – Attach the application form and any additional materials and send to [insert appropriate email] with “Bauder Scholarship Application” in the subject line. Applications must be received by April 21, 2023 to be considered.
If selected for an award:
The Scholar will be required to take a professional headshot, which will be arranged by CFUF staff. Scholars must sign a photo release form and consent to their headshot and biographical information being used on the CFUF website and social media pages. Additionally, the Scholars are expected to participate in a luncheon with CFUF staff and Dr. Lillian Bauder.
