UVA Honorees

Kwame Kwei-Armah is an international actor and playwright who is currently the Artistic Director of Baltimore Center Stage, the State Theatre of Maryland, and Chancellor of the University of the Arts London, Europe’s largest provider of education in the arts.

In addition to being an accomplished actor and playwright, Mr. Kwei-Armah is also a passionate activist. He has served as a voice for black British actors and also contributed to the positive response to Baltimore’s April 2015 unrest. Following Baltimore’s unrest, Mr. Kwei-Armah and his Marley cast took to the City’s most sensitive area to sing music from the play as a way of calming the City with upbeat, uplifting sounds and lyrics. Mr. Kwei-Armah served on the STRIVE London Board of Directors and was the Good Will Ambassador for Trade for Christian Aid from 2003 through 2008.

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings has dedicated his life of service to uplifting and empowering the citizens of Baltimore, Maryland. Since 1996, Congressman Cummings has proudly represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the past few years, Congressman Cummings has been a dedicated champion for the Center for Urban Families by taking an active role in advocating for the Center’s programs, inspiring its members and partnering with the Center at various community initiatives. Congressman Cummings currently serves as the Ranking Member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and he is also a senior member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

Recently concluding his 13-year tenure as board chair of the Center for Urban Families, David Warnock receives this special honor in appreciation of his work with the Center and its members. As one of Baltimore’s most notable philanthropists and community advocates, David Warnock continues to uplift causes and initiatives that transform the city for the better. Over the past few years, Mr. Warnock has built out the Warnock Foundation to address issues that are similar to those faced by members of the Center and remains a valued partner of the organization.
