Taking Quantum Leaps Into the Unknown
One leader puts it this way: "The problem that infuriates you the most is the problem that God has assigned you to solve”; truer words have never been spoken. Of all the daily societal challenges we face, there are two issues I am passionately dedicated to: 1. A father moved to tears due to his inability to be emotionally and financially responsible for his children; and 2. The daily struggles of single mothers raising children with limited resources.

Due to my frustration from these societal pains, my journey of connecting fathers and rebuilding families began.

I believe with all my heart (at the deepest core of my being) we are all created to fulfill a specific purpose in life, and amazingly, we all have the ability to choose to live out our purpose. For me, it was the summer of 2009 and I was living in Fairfax, Virginia when I decided to take the quantum leap into the unknown called, purpose. It has been stated time and time again that life begins at the end of our comfort zone, and for me, it was the transition from being a retail manager, to founder and president of a nonprofit, Father’s Rock, Inc.; this truly qualifies as the road into unknown territory.

While I had a dream and tons of passion, I quickly realized that my emotional “high” was not enough – I needed educational experiences in order to create sustainable methods, and ultimately produce sustainable results!

Just as I was grappling with which direction to turn next, the opportunity to serve as a fellow for the Practitioners Leadership Institute’s (PLI’s) Academy presented itself. My acceptance as a PLI Academy Fellow became the life raft to my newfound passion and dream of connecting healthy fathers and mothers to their children and communities; I now possess both passion and education…the perfect recipe for success!

My most recent venture has been authoring "The Champion Father", an inspirational book designed to bring out the champion, in every father. The PLI Academy has provided support to me and my organization, and has enabled me to create systematic approaches to integrate the methodologies and principles from my book, in partnership with other non-profit organizations. Although “The Champion Father” was just published in June 2013, I have successfully created five partnerships to assist me in furthering this movement! This was possible through my involvement with the PLI Academy and the network I was able to create.

New York Times best-selling author and leadership expert, John Maxwell stated, "A leader is one who knows the way, shows the way, and goes the way.”  Prior to becoming a PLI Academy Fellow, I lacked in all three areas, but now, I am exceeding even my own expectations. When I do have those days where I feel that I'm heading into uncharted territory, I know I have support from the other PLI Academy Fellows, as well as the PLI team.

In retrospect, I can honestly say that my experience with the PLI Academy has changed not only my life, but will and has changed the lives of the fathers, mothers and children who I serve.
